Krypton‐81 Dating Constrains Timing of Deep Groundwater Flow Activation

چکیده
Krypton-81 dating provides new insights into the timing, mechanisms, and extent of meteoric flushing versus retention saline fluids in subsurface response to changes geologic and/or climatic forcings over 50 ka 1.2 Ma year timescales. Remnant Paleozoic seawater-derived brines associated with evaporites Paradox Basin, Colorado Plateau, are beyond 81Kr range (>1.2 Ma) have likely been preserved due negative fluid buoyancy low permeability. formation waters above indicates topographically-driven recharge salt dissolution since Late Pleistocene (0.03–0.8 Ma). Formation below (up 3 km depth), basal aquifers, contain relatively young water components (0.4–1.1 based on 81Kr) that partially flushed remnant dissolved evaporites. We demonstrate recent, rapid denudation Plateau (<4–10 activated deep, basinal-scale flow systems as recorded groundwater age distributions.

Groundwater Age and Groundwater Age Dating
A new way of thinking about groundwater age is changing the field of groundwater age dating. Following a rigorous definition of age, a groundwater sample is seen not as water that recharged the flow regime at a point in the past, but as a mixture of waters that have resided in the subsurface for varying lengths of time. This recognition resolves longstanding inconsistencies encountered in age d...
متن کاملDating groundwater with trifluoromethyl sulfurpentafluoride
[1] A new groundwater dating procedure using the transient atmospheric signal of the environmental tracers SF5CF3, CFC-13, SF6, and CFC-12 was developed. The analytical procedure determines concentrations of the four tracers in air and water samples. SF5CF3 and CFC-13 can be used to date groundwaters in some environments where the CFCs and SF6 have previously failed because these new tracers ha...
متن کاملDating of Precambrian Metasedimentary Rocks and Timing of their Metamorphism in the Soursat Metamorphic Complex (NW IRAN): Using LA–ICP-MS, U–Pb Dating of Zircon and Monazite
Soursat Metamorphic Complex (SMC) in west of Takab city is one of the polyphase metamorphic terrenes in northern Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic belt of Iran. The SMC composed mainly of metasedimentary rocks associated with granitic intrusions. Based on metamorphic rocks, two metamorphic phases could be separate in the complex. M1 is representative of regional metamorphisms which varies from greens...
متن کاملU-Th dating of deep-sea corals
Th, Th, U and U compositions of several deep-sea solitary corals, mainly the species Desmophyllum cristagalli, were determined by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). It is possible to obtain high precision ages on modern pristine corals that have low [Th] (5 to a few hundred ppt). However, because older deep-sea corals tend to have higher [Th] compared to surface corals, and the initia...
متن کاملGroundwater Flow Models
In general, models are conceptual descriptions or approximations that describe physical systems using mathematical equations; they are not exact descriptions of physical systems or processes. By mathematically representing a simplified version of a hydrogeological system, reasonable alternative scenarios can be predicted, tested, and compared. The applicability or usefulness of a model depends ...
